NCAA — In men’s lacrosse, panel members approved a proposal to adjust the stall warning procedure to include a 30-second timeframe for the offensive team to take a shot.

Membership feedback on the proposal was positive, but the Men’s Lacrosse Rules Committee and Playing Rules Oversight Panel both received questions about the use of a visible shot clock in addition to the committee’s proposed procedure, which uses the game officials to manage the count.

The panel referred this request to the rules committee for further discussion. The proposed and approved rule therefore does not allow a visible shot clock to be used.

In the new procedure, when a team is given a stall warning, a shot must be taken within 30 seconds. A valid shot is defined as an attempt to score that is on goal (for example, saved by the goalkeeper, hits the goal cage, goal scored). If the 30 seconds expires without a shot on goal, the ball will be awarded to the defensive team. The previous “get it in, keep it in” call has been removed.

Here is the protocol referees will follow:

Officials signal a stall warning and start the 20-second timer.

At the end of the 20-second timer, a 10-second hand count is administered by the official closest to the ball. This official has responsibility for the count until a shot is taken or the time expires.

During the 30-second period, situations where a shot goes out of bounds and the offensive team maintains possession will be handled in this manner:

With more than 10 seconds remaining in the count, the timer continues to run and the procedure continues.

If the timer expires before the restart, a 10-second count will be administered beginning on the restart.

With less than 10 seconds remaining, the official shall hold the hand count when the whistle blows and continue the count on the restart. For example, if the ball goes out of bounds with eight seconds remaining on the count, that count continues on the restart. The official will communicate the amount of time remaining on the restart.

A shot that hits the goal cage or is saved by the goalkeeper and then possessed by the offensive team nullifies the stall warning and the game continues.

In a flag-down situation, the shot count will continue until it expires or a shot is taken.

Stalling will not be called during a man advantage.

If a shot hits a defensive team player other than the goalkeeper, it will not be considered a shot on goal.

The panel also approved a rule regarding shooting strings. Starting with the 2013 season, players will be allowed to have shooting strings up to but not touching four inches from the top of the crosse.

To ensure that all sticks meet these specifications the following three field tests will be performed by the officials.

The ball will be placed in crosse (perpendicular to the ground) at the throat, then the crosse is tipped forward 90 degrees;

The ball is placed in the crosse (horizontal to the ground) at the deepest point of the pocket, then the crosse is tipped forward 90 degrees so the ball rolls out at the tip of the head;

The ball is placed in the back of the crosse at the deepest point of the pocket and pushed in to reverse the pocket. The crosse is inverted 180 degrees. The ball must come out of the crosse without shaking, etc.

If the stick fails any of these tests, it is an illegal crosse and a one-minute non-releasable foul will be enforced. The crosse won’t be used during play and will be kept at the scorer’s table until the conclusion of the game.

The rules committee thought players currently are able to maintain possession of the ball too easily despite being pressured by the defense.

DENVER - The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team will play one of its toughest schedules to date as it faces five teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament, including NCAA Champion Loyola University.

“We are very excited about our 2013 schedule, the most formidable one in DU history,” said DU head coach Bill Tierney. “The ECAC slate, which will be a great challenge for us, includes the 2012 NCAA Champion Loyola Greyhounds, as well as Fairfield and Ohio State, who each beat us by a goal last year. Our nonconference schedule ranks up there with the hardest in the country, as we will face off against Notre Dame, Duke, Lehigh, Penn State, Penn and others.”

Denver opens the 2013 season against Duke in Durham, N.C., on Saturday, Feb. 9, and then returns to the Moe’s Southwest Grill Classic at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., to take on Penn State on Sunday, Feb. 17.

The Pioneers once again host the DU Face-Off Classic from Feb. 23-24 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, welcoming Lehigh, Canisius and Air Force. Lehigh and Canisius were both NCAA Tournament participants last season.

Denver remains at home the following weekend, hosting Penn, and then travels to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State on March 9 in its first Eastern College Athletic Conference game of the season. Next up for the Pioneers is a meeting with Notre Dame (March 16) at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium, followed by an ECAC meeting with Air Force at home (March 23).

After a trip to play ECAC opponent Hobart (March 30), the Pioneers return home to host first-year program Marquette on April 5. Less than 48 hours later, Denver picks up ECAC play against, welcoming Bellarmine to the Mile High City.

Denver closes out ECAC play against Loyola (April 13), Fairfield (April 20) and Michigan (April 27). The ECAC Tournament (May 2 & 4) will be hosted by Hobart College with the top four teams participating.

“We found out last year that a great strength of schedule is of primary importance when it comes to being chosen for the NCAA Tournament,” Tierney said. “We also believe that to be the best, you have to play the best, so although daunting, we look forward to playing this amazing schedule next spring.”

The Pioneers also have a full fall schedule in place to prepare them for the spring. Denver opens the fall season against Maryland in the first-ever Seatown Classic hosted by the Seattle US Lacrosse Chapter in Tukwila, Wash., at the Starfire Sports Campus on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Denver then hosts its annual alumni game on Saturday, Oct. 20, followed by the Fourth Annual Colorado Lacrosse Showcase between the Pioneers and Denver Outlaws. DU raps up its fall schedule against North Carolina in a scrimmage on Saturday, Jan. 29.

Season tickets for the 2013 DU men’s lacrosse season will go on sale in October. Season tickets are $80 and can be purchased by phone at 303-871-GOAL (4625) or online at http://j.mp/HqIKbr once they are available for purchase.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Division I Women’s Lacrosse Committee selected Villanova as the host school for the 2013 Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Villanova will be serving as host for the first time in the history of the event, which will be held May 24 and 26 at Villanova Stadium.

“We are thrilled that the 2013 championship will be making a return to Pennsylvania and are excited to be working with Villanova as host,” said Ann-Marie Guglieri, chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Committee and senior associate athletic director for internal operations/senior woman administrator at Colgate. “Historic Villanova Stadium will be a great setting that will provide for a rewarding student-athlete and fan experience which is great for the continual growth of the game of women’s lacrosse and our championship.”

The Division I women’s lacrosse championship was last held in Pennsylvania in 2007, as Northwestern defeated Virginia 15-13 in Philadelphia.

“Villanova University is honored to be named host institution for the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship,” Villanova director of athletics Vince Nicastro said. “This championship will feature the best competition in the country and is sure to become a signature event in women’s collegiate lacrosse as it will be played in one of the most avid lacrosse markets in the nation. We are extremely excited to be a part of it.”
