ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Alex Vasileff (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) netted a hat trick, while Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Brian Greiner (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) each scored twice, but the University of Michigan men’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-9 decision to Ohio State in the inaugural Battle at the Big House on Saturday (April 14) at Michigan Stadium.
Emil Weiss made 12 stops in goal and Vasileff upped his team-high goal total to 22 this season. Grenier’s pair of goals came via the coast-to-coast variety off faceoff victories.
Michigan trailed 6-2 with less than six minutes remaining in the second quarter but scored three of the next four goals to cut Ohio State’s lead to 7-5 at halftime. David McCormack (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) and Greiner scored back-to-back goals 11 seconds apart and Vasileff added his second goal of the game with 3:35 left before the half.
Ohio State increased the lead by outscoring Michigan 3-1 in the third quarter, including three straight goals, before Greiner countered with his second goal of the game at 5:49. Willie Steenland(Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) ripped in a bounce shot at the 12:19 in the fourth quarter to cut Ohio State’s lead to 10-7. Ohio State led by as many as five goals (12-7) in the fourth quarter. Goals by Vasileff and a tic-tac-toe score by Yealy on an assist from freshman Will Meter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) finished the Wolverine scoring.
Ohio State led 35-29 in groundballs and 35-25 in shots. Michigan was 10-of-22 in faceoffs, with Greiner generating two of Michigan’s goals following draws. Michigan was 19-of-22 on clears, while Ohio State was 15-of-17.
The Wolverines return to action next Saturday (April 21) at Rutgers. Game time is 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.
